INFLUENZA (FLU) VACCINE


The seasonal flu vaccination programme runs each year in autumn and winter, usually from September through to March. We begin inviting eligible patients from early autumn, in line with national guidance.


Who is eligible for a free flu vaccine?

You are eligible for a free flu vaccine if you:

Age groups

  • Are aged 65 years and over
  • Are a child aged 2–17 years (school-aged children are usually vaccinated at school)

Medical conditions (aged 6 months and over)

  • Chronic respiratory disease (e.g. asthma requiring regular steroid inhalers, COPD)
  • Chronic heart disease
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Chronic neurological disease (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, history of stroke/TIA)
  • Diabetes
  • Immunosuppression (due to disease or treatment, including chemotherapy or long-term steroids)
  • Morbid obesity (BMI ≥40)

You are also eligible if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Live in a residential or nursing home
  • Are a carer in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or the main carer of an elderly or disabled person
  • Are a household contact of someone who is immunocompromised
  • Are a frontline health or social care worker

The flu vaccine is safe, effective, and the best protection against serious illness and complications from influenza.


Where can I get the vaccine?

Eligible patients can receive their flu vaccine:

  • At the GP practice, or
  • At participating community pharmacies

COVID-19 VACCINE


Our COVID-19 vaccination programme runs each autumn and winter, helping protect people from serious illness over the winter months. In Northern Ireland, the vaccine is routinely offered to:

  • People aged 75 years and over
  • Residents and staff of older adult care homes
  • People aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed (due to health conditions or treatment) 

COVID-19 vaccines are available at the GP practice, participating community pharmacies, and local HSC Trust vaccination clinics. If you are eligible and haven’t yet been vaccinated or boosted, please contact us or your local pharmacy to book an appointment. 


 

PNEUMOCOCCAL AND SHINGLES VACCINATION


Pneumococcal Vaccine

The pneumococcal vaccine helps protect against serious infections like pneumonia and sepsis. In Northern Ireland, free pneumococcal vaccination is offered to:

  • People aged 65 years and over
  • People aged 2 years and over with certain long-term medical conditions

Shingles Vaccine

The shingles vaccine helps prevent shingles (a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox), and is offered free on the NHS to:

  • People aged 70 to 79 years who have not yet had the vaccine
  • People aged 18 years and over with severe immunosuppression
